What is SNMP?

Posted on December 13, 2023December 13, 2023 By Editorial Team

Simplified Network Management Protocol, or SNMP, is a protocol that oversees and controls IP-connected devices.   The number of devices—or entities—connecting to networks is growing every day, which implies that the importance of following a basic network management protocol is rising.

The protocol is crucial because it assists network administrators and managed service providers in getting the data they want from devices in order to monitor and manage them.

The system in SNMP is driven by the manager-agent relationship.  The manager is accountable for sending requests to the agents, who then must wait for the requests to arrive to respond to the manager with their responses.

Find more information about what SNMP is and how SNMP works on our blog.

What is SNMP used for?

About network management and monitoring and best rmm tools systems, SNMP extracts variables and their representative variables regarding devices.  Moreover, it can provide more specific information regarding the characteristics and actions of the device.  For instance, you can use SNMP to track variables related to nearly any device, including hubs, NAS, UPS, printers, routers, access points, and so on.

Compared to normal network monitoring methods, here is a glimpse of some of the more detailed data that may be monitored on a device with a basic network management protocol.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) devices: Battery voltage, battery status, battery voltage, battery temperature, alarm present, estimated residual time and estimated residual charge.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices:

Hard disk table: Hard drives, model, capacity, information, temperature, and status

The volume tables include the following: volume, description, free size, total size, filter system, and status.

Basic information: CPU utilization, CPU temperature, total available memory, free memory, uptime, system temperature, number of hard drives, volumes, and last error message.

Printers: Supply Level and Supply Units (Drum Unit, Toner Cartridge).

How to monitor devices using the simple network monitoring protocol

First, you must have access to your device’s OIDs and MIBs to begin utilizing SNMP for device monitoring.

Alternatively, you can use a MIB browser to locate this information if your network monitoring software does not currently have pre-configured SNMP templates or gather MIB information for you.

SNMP Components

These are the structural elements of the basic network monitoring protocol.

  • The manager
  • The agents
  • A database of management Information. ’
  • Managed objects
  • The SNMP itself

What is the SNMP Manager?

The intermediary between the human network administrator and the network system you oversee is known as the SNMP manager.  It guarantees that the SNMP agents verify the value of specific defined variables within the MIB.  To facilitate this process, the manager uses a technique known as SNMP polling, to which all agents are required to respond.  Polling can be started manually or automatically.

What is the SNMP Agent?

The agency is responsible for managing network communication.  It oversees sending out traps, responding to inquiries, and fulfilling requests from the SNMP manager. It operates on a managed device.  When the agency receives a request, it responds to it and sends the manager the outcome.

Devices

SNMP device management falls under the purview of simple network management protocol managers.  Firewalls, switches, printers, routers, servers, CCTV cameras, load balancers, and any other device with SNMP capabilities in its specifications can all be considered devices.

Commands

To put it briefly, commands serve to streamline network management.  Moreover, an SNMP Manager can use these instructions to get more information about an SNMP Agency.

MIBs

The acronym for Management Information Base is MIB.  This is an informational collection organized hierarchically.  Every SNMP agent has a database that contains details about every device it oversees.  MIBs are stored as text files.  Moreover, the formats are understandable to editors, management tools, simulation tools, and everyone else that need the information.

OIDs

The acronym for Object Identifiers is OID.  They identify objects that are part of a MIB hierarchy.  Two categories of managed objects exist:

  • Scalar objects define individual objects

  • Multiple related objects are defined using tabular objects. OIDs are arranged in a hierarchy that is represented by a triangle. Every branch has a number and name, and the name of a point is formed by the path that leads from the treetop to the point of interest.

Community Strings

Read-only: You can only extract read-only data with this string.  The function simply reads the values of the data; it does not allow you to alter them.

Read-write: You can perform further operations with this string, such as reading the data value, changing these values, and even resetting them.

Trap community strings: The device sends SNMP traps to this string.

Above all, we must note that many devices leave the factory with two community string settings: one for read-only access and the other for read-write access.

Traps and Trap Messages

This section covers messages and traps first.  First, messages are sent from an agent to a manager via SNMP traps.  Additionally, they notify the manager when they discover anomalies at the agent level.  Furthermore, the message conveyed by the trap is distinct from other messages in the architecture.  Other messages must wait for the manager to send a status request before they may report a situation; however, the trap message can report a situation by itself instantly.

These are a few examples of trap-type messages and their interpretations:

Cold Start: The initialization of an agent’s configuration table.

Warm Start: The message prompts an agent to reload its configuration table.

Link Up: This message represents the transformation of a network adapter from a down to an up state.

Link Down: Signals a network adapter to switch from an up to a down state.

Authentication Failure: The manager’s representation of the agency’s community is untrue.

EGP Loss of neighbour: The entity is unable to communicate via its External Gateway Protocol (EGP).

What are the different SNMP Versions?

SNMP has thrее versions:

V1: The SNMP v1 was initially released in 1988.  However, it is hardly used anymore, which indicates that it is quickly becoming outdated.

V2c: To start, SNMP v2 refers to SNMP v2c, which is the most widely used of the three SNMP v2 versions.  Furthermore, it features an enhanced MIB structural element.

V3: Security concerns led to the SNMP version 3 deployment.  Moreover, this version has more powerful features like encryption and authentication.  In the end, it prioritizes safety and security more to reduce eavesdropping and tampering.
